Free music making software?

Anybody know of any cheap/free music-making software?

Need to find software that will let me create not-so-complex-sounding music for a mobile app program. I need to emulate a guitar/drums & vocals (I suppose I could just run a ‘line-in’ on my computer with a microphone and do the vocals myself, no?).

Or, is there software that would let me run a line-in (or something) where I could play guitar into my computer and record it? And just make drum beats for it with something else and then splice it all together, somehow?

Anybody know what I’m trying to get at? Lol How do I create music/make the drum beats, etc. without going into a recording studio!
